October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Cancer is the leading cause of death for firefighters. Firefighters have an increased risk of all cancers, including breast cancer. One study from San Francisco showed that the diagnosis of breast cancer in female firefighters was six times higher than the national average. The SPFD Cancer Task Force is fundraising to donate to the American Cancer Society as part of our Pink Patch Project. The Saint Paul Fire Department will also have a team participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at the Mall of America on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
